HOVER-BOYS
OF AMERICA MEMBERSHIP CARD
(1947)
"Know the Enemy!"
Thanks
so much to Peter Adams who sent in his vintage membership card
for the HOVER-BOYS OF AMERICA club! Peter writes:
Marcus,
have you ever seen one of these? It's my member card for the official
Hoverboy fan club. I sent away for this in late 1947. I remember it
distincly because to get one cost 4 bucks! This was when you could
by comics for 10 cents! The add in the book claimed that along with
your membership you got the member card, and an official Hoverboy belt.
I saved for months, and even stole some money from my Mom. After
an agonizing couple of months a thin envelope showed up with this flimsy
paper card inside. No belt. No nothing. What a rip off! Then
my parents found out how much I'd spent on it and I was given
a
"belting"
from my
dad (oh, the irony...).
The
memory of
that whipping has kept this childhood purchase fresh in my mind for
50 years.
Sometimes
the past really does hurt! Either Peter got in on the ground floor
of the Hover-Boys of America, or their were pretty few members, as
denoted by his membership number 96. Not surprising, as I imagine few
kids could have afforded a 4 dollar premium in 1947.
Upon
close inspection, the text around the Hoverboy seal reads,
KNOW
THE ENEMY
THE
ENEMY IS EVERYWERE
THEY
WONT BE LIKE YOU
Uh...
I hate to read into that too much, but when you combine that slogan
with the image... Is Hoverboy waving to his fans, or....? |
